Protesters in Tampa have burned down an American flag because of their belief that, like the Confederate flag, it signifies and uphold in the slavery and genocide from the country throughout history. Organizers of the protest denied they planned on burning the flag, but did not issue any statement of apology regarding the matter. After the massacre in Charleston, people are calling for banishment of the Confederate flag, allegedly symbolizing racism.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - "To us the Confederate flag and the American flag, those represent the same thing which is that this country, this social system was built on slavery and genocide," said Jesse Nevel who represented the Uhuru Solidarity Movement in the End Racist Violence protest, held the eve of the Independence Day anniversary.
Activists present kept on chanting "black lives matter" as they burned the American flag, all documented on video. The protestors also demanded the Confederate flags be brought down all over the city.
They are also asking to rename the school, initially dubbed after an American Civil War confederate army commander, Robert E. Lee. Protesters explained they are willing to continue their rally until their demands are met, including the launching of official investigations over the alleged recent cases of racial discrimination against blacks in Tampa. The rally ended in peace, without anyone getting arrested, according to the Press TV.
Organizers claim they did not expect the burning of the American flag would be instigated during their event.
"I'm not sure what message that sent. We just organized the event to make sure people came here and had an outlet to express themselves. We didn't plan every detail," said Alekos Zambrano of Raices en Tampa.
It was reported that it was not the first time Uhuru Solidarity Movement burned the American Flag.
