MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - According to the report by the Sierra Vista Herald, the representatives were able to hear out sentiments from the affected and concerned group of people. Two leading members of the National Sheriffs' Association responded to the invitation from the Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels.
"The sheriffs along the border - whether it's Arizona, Texas, New Mexico or California, it doesn't matter - they're the ones that catch the brunt of it. They're the ones that get the call from the citizens, like those ranchers we heard from. But, when those people get here, get across our border uncontested, then it becomes a national problem," said Sheriff Harold Eaveson of the Rockwell County in Texas, serving the association as the third vice president.
The system of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Enforcement was described as ineffective; there are smugglers and illegal immigrants able to breach the country. These illegal activities have left the residents and local ranchers in dismay with broken fences, home invasions and burglaries, among the cited crimes.
Cochise County has expressed it is the seemingly lack of will from Washington to shut the border down, that is makes the issue national. Many of the local ranchers have supported local sheriff's office efforts and have asked for cooperation from federal leaders with the local law enforcement. They believe that, as said by Sheriff Dannels, local agencies working closely with the federals will produce results.
