BOSTON, MA (Catholic Online) - Police have apprehended Dzhokhar Tsarnaev following a day-long manhunt focused on Watertown, a Boston suburb.
The city of Boston had spent most of the day sheltering in place, with mass transit shut down and businesses closed. Police filled the streets of Watertown with their vehicles as they went door-to-door searching homes for the suspect. After a fruitless day of searching, authorities lifted the order to shelter in place.
Upon the lifting of the order to shelter, a Watertown man walked outside and saw a bloody trail leading to his boat, which was parked in his driveway and covered with a tarp. Lifting the tarp, the man spotted the suspect covered with blood lying inside his boat. The man ran and called 911 and police responded instantly.
A police helicopter was able to detect his body heat under the tarp using and infrared sensor.
After a tense standoff lasting a few hours, the uncommunicative suspect was removed from the boat by an FBI assault team. There was an exchange of gunfire at the initial. There are no reports that he possessed any explosives.
At this time, Tsarnaev is in an area hospital receiving medical treatment. Authorities have confirmed that he has not been read his Miranda rights, which means he can be interrogated by authorities without full Constitutional protection. This is because of an exception to federal law in cases of terrorism.
Following his stabilization, he will be interrogated by a special federal team.
Tsarnaev's brother, Tamerlan Tsarnev, 26, is dead following a shootout last night.
Authorities say they do not believe there is any danger of imminent terrorist attack. The brothers are confirmed to be practicing Muslims from Chechnya. Although they spent most of their life in the United States, they retained sympathies associated with the Chechen separatist movement.
It remains to be determined if he was a member of a larger hostile affiliation.
