See where you can ride a square-wheeled tricycle and why.

A math museum set to open in New York hopes to teach visitors just where those math skills are going to be used. The first of its kind in the U.S., the quirky museum has recently opened to the public inviting visitors to explore its many interactive exhibits, including tricycles with square wheels.

BROOKLYN, NY (Catholic Online) - Opening on East 26th Street in Manhattan, the Math museum has pi shaped door handles and an elevator whose ground floor is marked 0 and basement -1.

The first museum of its kind in the U.S. hopes to serve 60,000 visitors during the first year of operation.

While the entire premise of a math museum may sound boring, consider that it is the only place where you can ride a square-wheeled tricycle. Despite having square wheels, the tricycle works because the track it runs on is a "catenaried" surface. Ironically, a wheeled trike wouldn't work.

The museum fights notions of its inherent boredom with other attractions such as the Tracks of Galileo which allows visitors to experiment with an adjustable roller coaster. Other attractions include interactive exhibits that allow visitors to play with probability, geometry, and music.

Of course, the gift shop is replete with brainteasers and educational videos.

For anyone who loves math, the museum will certainly be a success.

For the rest of us, we'll be by the adjustable roller coaster.
