P>KNOXVILLE, TN (Catholic Online) - History is being made in the state of Maryland! According to an article written by Ben Nuckols for the Associated Press, two so-called medical doctors, who make their living by performing abortions, have been arrested, charged with multiple counts of murder, and put in jail.
It began about 16 months ago after Dr. Steven Brigham and Dr. Nicila Riley were involved in a botched abortion on an 18-year-old girl who was 21 weeks pregnant. Based on an investigation conducted by medical regulators, the girl's uterus was ruptured and her bowel injured. According to the regulator's report, Dr. Riley drove the girl to a nearby hospital instead of calling 911, and both doctors were uncooperative when questioned.
Moreover, Dr. Brigham's clinic in Elkton, Maryland, where the botched abortion took place, was later searched by the authorities. They found 35 late-term aborted children in the freezer. They believe that one child was 9 months or 36 weeks old at the time she was aborted.
Regulators also indicated that Dr. Brigham would begin abortions in New Jersey then have his patients drive themselves to Maryland to finish the abortion. He apparently did this because he was not allowed to perform abortions in New Jersey after the first trimester. The regulators said that this practice was manipulative and deceptive.
Dr. Brigham did not have a Maryland license when he performed the botched abortion. Consequently, medical regulators ordered him to stop practicing medicine in Maryland. Furthermore, his New Jersey license was suspended. This left him without a valid license in any state. Dr. Riley's Maryland license was also suspended. In addition, a grand jury has now indicted the two doctors.
Dr. Brigham was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Camden County jail. He is being charged with five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy. The police have also arrested Dr. Riley in Salt Lake City, Utah, and she is being charged with one count each of first and second degree murder and one count of conspiracy. Both are awaiting extradition hearings.
Their arrests were made possible due to a state law in Maryland that allows "murder or manslaughter charges to be brought against a person who intends to kill or seriously injure a fetus or who wantonly disregards the safety of a fetus." Of course, the law, which was passed in 2005, does not apply to legal abortions. At present, 37 other states have similar laws.
In the past, this kind of law has only been used in cases where the accused assaulted or killed a pregnant woman. According to a representative at the Center for Reproductive Rights, this is apparently the first time that this law has been used to directly charge an abortion provider with the "death of a fetus" in the United States.
Based on the above video, it appears that these doctors have a history of criminal activity. The AP article quoted Father Frank Pavone's response to the arrest of Dr. Steven Brigham and Dr. Nicila Riley. He said, "These two individuals are now where they belong and should be in jail for the rest of their lives."
I agree with Father Pavone. Mothers and fathers have been charged with abuse, arrested, and thrown in jail for merely spanking or slapping their child in public, while our laws have protected those who have killed over 50 million children in their mother's wombs. It is about time the authorities arrested real criminals. I applaud the state of Maryland.
-----
Michael Terheyden was born into a Catholic family, but that is not why he is a Catholic. He is a Catholic because he believes that truth is real, that it is beautiful and good, and that the fullness of truth is in the Catholic Church. However, he knows that God's grace operating throughout his life is the main reason he is a Catholic. He is greatly blessed to share his faith and his life with his beautiful wife, Dorothy. They have four grown children and three grandchildren.
