WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - Saturday Mass attendance may be higher for parishes in New York and the Washington, DC area as people remember the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

In observance of this anniversary, St. Peter's parish on Staten Island will be dedicating a memorial wall for the victims and their families.

In an interview with Vatican Radio, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York said, "It's a remarkable day of prayer and memory." This is the archbishop's second 9-11 observance as leader of the Archdiocese of New York where he will be present for the dedication.

The official New York City observance of the anniversary is scheduled to take place at the site of the World Trade Center on Saturday morning. As in the past, the ceremony will observe four moments of silence to commemorate the times when each plane hit and each tower fell, starting at 8:46 a.m.

The 9/11 Memorial Preview Site, at 20 Vesey Street in New York, will also be open from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. for family members, survivors and others closely impacted by the attacks. Staff will be on hand to talk about plans for the memorial.

On Saturday evening at sunset, New York will again feature the "Tribute in Light." Using forty-four 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs arranged in two 48-foot squares on the ground, the tribute becomes a reminder of the twin towers by extending shafts of light four miles into the sky, which is visible from as far as 30 miles away. These two light shafts are the strongest illuminations that have ever been projected from earth in the night sky.

In Arlington County, Virginia, where the Pentagon is located, a moment of silence will be held at 9:37 a.m. to remember the 184 victims who perished when a hijacked American Airlines plane that had taken off from Dulles Airport plunged into the structure.

Calling it "Flags Across Arlington," Arlington County will also hang U.S. flags from overpasses and buildings in a display similar to the one that spontaneously took place after 9/11.

In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a ceremony is also scheduled at the Flight 83 National Memorial at 9:30am. Keynote speakers will include first lady Michelle Obama and former first lady Laura Bush. The observance will be similar to past events and include reading of the names of passengers and crew by family members as well as the tolling of the Bells of Remembrance at 10:03 a.m., the time Flight 93 crashed.
