ATLANTA, GA (Catholic Online) - Feticide is defined in most dictionaries as the act of killing a fetus. A human fetus is defined as an unborn child. On May 14, 2010, 21 year old Jessica Bruce of Georgia was charged with vehicular feticide. In other words, she was charged with killing her own child. Here are the details. It is alleged in the criminal complaint that Jessica Bruce attempted to elude a police stop for excessive speed. She led the Douglasville, Georgia Police on a dramatic high speed chase. The Police clocked Ms. Bruce traveling in her Pontiac at 86 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. She was traveling on Interstate 20 in Douglasville. When she saw the Police in hot pursuit she left the highway and continued to accelerate - weaving dangerously in and out of cars in a residential neighborhood. Finally, she crashed into two cars. She was so entangled in the resulting mess that she had to be cut from the wreckage. Jessica Bruce was not alone in her car. She was carrying her 24 week old child in the first home of the whole human race, her womb. One witness to the crash, Tracey Harris, told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV what she heard. "Sounded like a big explosion. [I saw] one car just kind of go airborne and slam into the back of the other one.Her car just came apart. The whole tail-end kind of it came off. Her stuff was all over the street." Ms. Bruce was rushed to Grady memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Doctors tried to rescue the child in her womb by performing an emergency C Section. The baby did not survive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation performed an autopsy to determine the cause of death of the other occupant of the vehicle. They ruled that the crash killed the child. On May 14, 2010 Jessica Bruce was charged with vehicular feticide. Under Georgia law, vehicular feticide falls under the O.C.G.A. 40-6-393.1. It corresponds with their vehicular homicide statute. Currently, numerous states have some kind of fetal homicide laws. The states include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. These laws are good pieces of legislation which serve the common good. Many have been enacted as a result of the hard work of commendable groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). However, they also point to the lack of interest in the truth when we are discussing the Rights of our youngest neighbors, children in the womb. I remember a popular game show entitled "To Tell the Truth" when I was younger. It began its long television tenure in 1969. My mother loved to watch it. For those unfamiliar with the show, there were three contestants who attempted to deceive a four member panel of celebrities as to their true identity. One of them was the actual person associated with the events which were told to the contestants in a sworn affidavit read on the air. It recounted the story of the real person. It is time we tell the truth about what happens in every single procured abortion; a child is intentionally killed. Procured abortions are Feticide. Whether by using chemical weapons, surgical strikes, or suction, children are killed by medical "professionals" who then receive money for committing this reprehensible act. We need to call this evil act what it is. We need to tell the truth. We need to use truthful language about intentional feticide. For example, I call children in the womb our "first neighbors" in my writing. We all know we should not kill our innocent neighbors and the womb is the "first home" of the whole human race. When we stand up for these children we are standing in solidarity with our neighbor. I regularly use Mother Teresa's reminder that they are the "poorest of the poor" because they have no voice to defend them but our voice. We all have an obligation to love the poor. We cannot stand by while they are evicted and killed by abortion. Every single person alive today once lived in a womb! Our 4D technology now allows us to surgically intervene to help our littlest neighbors in that home. It also enables us to take their picture at an earlier, younger stage in what is a lifetime of human development. There is even an "App" for it now on the I-Pad and many of our phones. For Christians, the fact of what occurs in every procured abortion is even more profound when we remember that our Redeemer lived in a womb! Thus, His stirring words, recorded in the twenty fifth chapter of Matthews' Gospel, have an exceedingly poignant application in relationship to our sisters and brothers in the womb: "Whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me." We must replace the current culture of death, nihilism, and instrumentalism with a new culture of life and a civilization of love. Our "strategy" must be to end legal abortion. The claim of a "right" to abort an innocent child is heinous. It is Orwellian doublespeak to couch this evil in the language of a woman's "Right to Choose." Some choices are always and everywhere wrong. Yet, that is the state of the positive law in America since the horrendous decisions in Roe and Doe. Women are actually encouraged to "choose" to take the life of their own children. However, such a "choice" is always and everywhere wrong because it is the taking of innocent human life. If Jessica Bruce had not exceeded the speed limit and crashed, but rather had driven to an abortion facility where she gave money to someone to kill her child, she would not have been charged with a crime. However, her baby would be just as dead. Abortion is the only example of intentionally taking innocent human life which is protected by the Police Power of the State. It has a special status as some sort of "super right" in the American libertine culture and the dictatorship of relativism. Imagine if the positive law created a so called "right" to kill three week old babies outside of the womb because the Supreme Court said it was OK. There is no moral difference. A child is a child. In an effort to change the legal debate, abortion advocates have fashioned a "rights language" to make it sound different. It does not work. Science has confirmed what our conscience long ago told us, the child in the womb is one of us. This truth is also written on our hearts by the Natural Law - which all just positive laws should participate in and not abrogate. Intentional abortion should be illegal, period, in a just society. The notion that the act of intentionally killing a member of an entire class of human beings should be called a "right" is reprehensible for another reason. Since when do actions have rights? Only human persons can have "rights." Rights are "goods" of the human person. And Governments do not create them, they can only recognize them. As the American founders reminded us, echoing the Western Christian tradition, they are endowed upon us by a Creator. The child who is killed in every procured abortion had the true Right, the Right to Life. The Atlanta Journal Constitution published an update on this sad story on May 13, 2010, "Jessica Bruce is in fair condition at Grady Memorial Hospital Thursday. She underwent an emergency C-section Wednesday night after being cut out of her wrecked Pontiac, but the child did not survive, said Douglas Co. Coroner Randy Daniel. The fetus was transported to the GBI crime lab where an autopsy on Thursday determined the child died from injuries sustained in the crash, Daniel said. The woman was about 6 to 7 months pregnant, he said." Of course, the fact that the term fetus was used to describe the child who was killed in this tragic crash even after the little baby was delivered shows just how much work we have to do in our just cause.Once a child is outside of her first home, it is always grammatically incorrect to refer to them as fetus. Of course, many understandably object to the use of the term "fetus" at all because it obscures the humanity and personhood of the child in the womb from the moment of conception. On May 15, another update on the case appeared in the same newspaper. Referring to Jessica Bruce the report read "Once she is released from the hospital, a 21-year-old woman will head to jail for allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in several crashes and the death of her unborn child. Jessica Bruce has been charged with feticide and more charges are pending." At least this report called the little one a child. We will continue to follow the story of Jessica Bruce and the baby she is charged with killing. May this tragedy help to foment a National discussion which leads to telling the Truth about abortion.
