For this band of violent and paranoid militia to be called a "Christian" group in news accounts was not only factually inaccurate - it was insulting to Christians during this Holiest of Weeks.

P>DETROIT, MI. (Catholic Online) - The Press reports multiplied on Monday of the holiest week of the Christian year. Most referred to the violent, extremist group "the Hutaree" as a "Christian militia". In fact, these people are anything but Christian. They claimed on their poorly constructed web site that the word stands for "Christian Warrior." However, even a cursory reading of their material reveals they are anything but Christian.
The members of this anti- Government, apocalyptic sect are led by a man named David Brian Stone. They attempt to use strange ramblings on their website to try to make their ultra right wing, violent anti-government crusade somehow "sound" Christian. There is nothing new to this tactic; one has only to look at the same tactic used by the virulently racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic Ku Klux Klan.
Stone, along with five others from Michigan, two from Ohio and one from Indiana, were arrested in a dramatic raid at the groups compound. This violent right wing group was based in Adrian, Michigan. Those accused are David Brian Stone, 45; his wife, Tina Stone, 44; his son, Joshua Matthew Stone, 21, and his other son, David Brian Stone Jr., 19, of Adrian. Also accused are Joshua Clough, 28, of Blissfield; Michael Meeks, 40 of Manchester; Thomas Piatek, 46, of Whiting, Ind.; Kristopher Sickles, 27, of Sandusky, Ohio; and Jacob Ward, 33, of Huron, Ohio.
They were charged with conspiring to kill a police officer, and other violent acts which amount to the commission of terrorism on American soil. The insidious plan was revealed in Court documents released to the Press. Documents allege that the planned murder of the Police Officer was specifically intended to be used to set up a funeral where large numbers of other officers would gather.
At that funeral, where other Officers, many probably Christian, would gather to mourn and pray for their fallen friend, this crazed fringe group was planning to detonate homemade bombs filled with deadly projectiles. In other words, they were going to use I.E.D´s - Improvised Explosive Devices - on American soil. The goal was to cause maximum human casualties and thereby somehow hasten their delusional, evil apocalyptic scenario.
The group apparently views local, state, and federal law enforcement as their enemy. Their apparent goal is to foment an armed conflict with the Police. Now, can these kinds of evil acts truly be attributed to Christians? Why would so many in the Media repeat such a false allegation?
The news of the dramatic raid came the morning after many Christians heard the account of the Passion of the Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed at the beginning of the Holiest Week in the Christian year. In the account from St. Luke´s Gospel read at the Catholic Liturgy for Passion/Palm Sunday (Luke 22:14 - 23: 56) we heard of the encounter between Jesus and His captors in that Garden called Gethsemane. There, one of his disciples sought to wield a sword of violence to repel the authorities. It is absolutely clear in this account where Jesus - and thus His Church - stand on the improper use of the sword - outside of legitimate self defense.
For this band of misguided paranoid militia to be called a "Christian" group in most news accounts was not only factually inaccurate - it was profoundly insulting to Christians everywhere during this Holiest of Weeks. Such a labeling may also be an ominous sign of a growing animus against Christians.
Andrew Arena, an F.B.I. special agent told the Press "This is an example of radical and extremist fringe groups which can be found throughout our society... The FBI takes such extremist groups seriously, especially those who would target innocent citizens and the law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of the United States."
The accused members of the "Hutaree" appear on their camouflaged background web site dressed in military fatigues and armed to the hilt. They look like a bunch of crazed middle age guys playing soldier in the woods. They are labeled in the indictment as an "anti-government extremist organization."
The charges filed against them include sedition, attempts to use weapons of mass destruction, teaching/demonstrating use of explosive materials and two counts of carrying weapons in relation to a crime of violence. No Christian would engage in such acts.
Here are some excerpts taken from their web site, complete with out of context misquotes from the Bible and misspellings appearing in the text.

About Us: HUTAREE; Christian Warrior
As christians we all are a part of the Souls of the Body of Christ, the one true church of Christ. Not any specific man made building or any man controlled organization. This is the belief of the Hutaree soldier, as should the belief of all followers in Christ be.
We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. All christians must know this and prepare, just as Christ commanded. Luke 22:35-37, And He said to them, "When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?" So they said, "Nothing." 36, Then he said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37, "For I say to you that this which is written must be accomplished in me: ´And He was numbered with transgressors,´ For the things concerning Me have an end." This clearly states the reason for the training and preparation of the Hutaree.
Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment. The only thing on earth to save the testimony and those who follow it, are the members of the testimony, til the return of Christ in the clouds. We, the Hutaree, are prepared to defend all those who belong to Christ and save those who aren´t. We will still spread the word, and fight to keep it, up to the time of the great coming.
Being Hutaree is to stay the Testimony of Christ alive, and follow a motto, John15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." We are hoping that through this website we can reach out to those who have not the word of God and those who are lost in there ideas of Christ. Many of the things Christ said would happen have happened and some things are still in the works of happening.
We all must know that we all carry a cross and a soldiers cross is just as heavy as any other. Just as Jesus did we must also carry our cross to our destination our life abounds us to. All people are givin a destination by God´s will and have to continue there walk to there own golgotha. But many people, even christians don´t agree with the things we do but all we have to say is, we will not argue over the Bible, read it for what it is. We believe only what the Bible says and not on only philosophy, as many christians of this day do. Christ is our king of kings and top general of all things, for we are not of this world but we live in it.
The Hutaree will one day see its enemy and meet him on the battlefield if so God wills it. We will reach out to those who are yet blind in the last days of the kingdoms of men and bring them to life in Christ. Daniel 11:32-35, "Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. 33, "And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. 34, "Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join them by intrigue. 35 "And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time."

Links on this bizarre website lead to anti-Semitic sites; sites containing other apocalyptic nonsense and sites where anyone can learn how to build an underground shelter and purchase survivalist products. The rhetoric is bizarre and in no way can be called "Christian".
This fringe group is a tiny, anti-Government, armed group of misguided middle aged people who apparently planned to commit an egregiously evil act of violence against Police Officers and terrorism against the United States of America.
The authorities should be commended for halting the plot before any acts of violence occurred. However, the effort to paint the group as "Christian" in the media is reprehensible - especially during Holy Week.
