UPDATED - Officials report that the gunman who shot two Pentagon police officers on Thursday was fatally wounded by the return fire. The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, from Hollister, CA. Reportedly, Bedell was carrying two 9mm handguns with several magazines of ammunition and dressed in a business suit at the time of the incident.

At an early morning press conference on Friday, Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police, said that they believe the man acted alone and there is no apparent connection with terrorism. "He came here from California," Keevill stated. "We were able to identify certain locations where he spent the last several weeks, making his way from the West coast to the East coast."

The wounded police officers have been identified as Jeffrey Amos and Marvin Carraway. One was shot in the shoulder and the other in the thigh. They were treated at George Washington University Hospital in Northwest Washington and released.

According to the Associated Press, a person on the internet with the screen name JPatrickBedell made several posts expressing anger toward the government and armed services along with questions about the 9-11 terrorist attacks. He also wrote that he was "determined to see that justice is served" in the death of Marine Col. James Sabow. Sabow was found dead in the backyard of his California home in 1991. While the death was ruled suicide and the case closed, theories involving a cover up had been circulating since then.

The Pentagon is open again this morning but security measures have been heightened.

WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - The Pentagon is on lock down after a lone gunman opened fire at the entrance to the Metro subway station at the Pentagon, wounding two Pentagon police officers. The shooter was wounded as the officers returned fire.

The two officers, who belonged to the The Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), and the civilian gunman were all taken to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The incident occured around 6:40pm Eastern time at the Metro entrance just outside the main doors to the historic five-sided building. Metro officials told AFP that Pentagon authorities were also investigating some suspicious packages at the scene.

The Metro station returned to normal activity around 8:00pm but the area where the shootings occured was still restricted for investigative purposes.
