BETHPAGE, TN (Catholic Online) - Everyone who has ever kept vigil outside an abortion clinic knows the streaking thrill of anticipation at the possibility of helping save one tiny life. But no one could have guessed how "last minute" salvation would come to Baby Claire, rescued after the abortion to end her life had already begun.
Jamie Stout of Las Vegas, Nevada and her first daughter were already in the care of her parents last November when she became homeless, jobless, and pregnant. Her neighbor, an ultrasonographer at First Choice Pregnancy Services in Las Vegas, heard Jamie was considering an abortion and rushed to meet her at the clinic where she was even then in the process of an abortion as her father waited in the car outside.
After convincing Jamie´s father to help her rescue the helpless, 20 week old baby from a violent murder, they discovered Jamie had already undergone step one of the three-step abortion process: the insertion of dilators that expand the cervix to accommodate the expulsion of a dead baby.
Steps two and three were scheduled for the proceeding days, but there was a narrow, six-hour window in which rescue was possible. It was uncertain whether or not the abortionist had already injected the baby with fatal drugs.
The ultrasonographer counseled Jamie about the abortion process and its cruelty against her child in a supernatural balancing act. While advising the desperate mother, she prayed silently and contacted colleagues at First Choice Pregnancy Center who could help find an area physician willing to reverse the abortion process and a gynecologist who would take the, now, high-risk pregnancy. Most thought it was simply too late.
In the midst of all the action on her behalf, Baby Claire´s life was still in the balance, as Jamie had not yet decided to save her baby and reverse the abortion process, and time was running out. The First Choice Pregnancy Services team turned to God for intervention as they labored in the search for doctors, and after several failed attempts that left them feeling desperate, things finally began to fall into place.
Jamie decided to save her baby, and the resources miraculously appeared. Baby Claire is due next month to an entire family that has been beautifully touched by the grace of the miracle.
As pro-life laborers, lay and professional, we must cling to the knowledge that some abortions, even though begun, can be reversed. Often the tell-tale sign is a woman who goes into, and comes out of an abortion clinic with no noticeable change in the appearance of her pregnancy.
So many participated in the salvation of this child, each contributing what was hers to give. It is never too late to give to your local crisis pregnancy center, never too late to keep vigil outside a clinic, never too late to counsel a pregnant mother, never too late tell a woman she has the power to save her baby´s life. It´s never too late to turn the tide of abortion.
