DETRIOT, MI - (Catholic Online) - 23 year old Umar Abdul Muallab is originally from Nigeria. His father, a retired bank executive named Alkali Umaru Mutallab is speaking with authorities.
What is emerging from the reports of passengers and sources familiar with the investigation is that his son is a terrorist who had a deadly plan.
The father has indicated to authorities that he has not seen his son for some time. He last remembers him living in London. "I believe he might have been to Yemen, but we are investigating to determine that" he told the Associated press.
A Nigerian newspaper account indicates that the young man had embraced what his father called "extreme religious views." In fact, his extreme Muslim religious views were so worrisome that his father had reported him to both the US Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria and Nigerian security forces over six months ago.
However, this young Muslim, with known extremist views, ended up on an airplane on Christmas day equipped with explosive materials. He had an evil and deadly plan to make history on Christmas Day by blowing the airplane up in midair.
There were no air marshals on the flight. However, there were observant passengers; two of whom are rightly being hailed as heroes.
They observed the terrorist going into the restroom and coming out looking "agitated." He had what appeared to be a pillow stuffed under his shirt. He began to inject a fluid into an unknown substance with a syringe.
Reports from among the 278 passengers and 11 crew members indicate that some saw smoke, a glow and then heard what sounded like firecrackers.
One of the brave passengers jumped on the terrorist. The other restrained him by holding him in headlock. The first one suffered burns from contact with the materials.
The plan is clear to anyone who considers even the bare bones reports we now have. This Muslim extremist intended to kill all of the passengers and crew in order to strike terror throughout the rest of the world.
After the terrorist was tackled, his pants were removed. He was taken to a front row seat. An eye witnesses indicated he was badly burned on his legs and there were explosive materials strapped to him.
Authorities recovered what is reported as a "powdered substance" and other materials which were a part of the explosive device. They are all being analyzed.
This incident was a thwarted terror attempt over the United States of America on Christmas day. It took place on Northwest Airlines Flight # 253. The flight originated in Amsterdam and was scheduled to arrive in Detroit before noon on Christmas Day.
