UPDATE - According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Army now says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in the shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. Lt. Gen. Bob Cone stated at a Thursday afternoon news conference that one shooter has been killed and two suspects were apprehended on Thursday. He says they are all U.S. soldiers.

ABC News has identified the primary gunman as Major Malik Nadal Hassan. According to ABC's Brian Ross, he was a recent convert to Islam.

Cone said that the shooting began around 1:30 p.m. and that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

He says the primary shooter used two handguns in the attack.

WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - Fort Hood is in lockdown after 7 persons were killed and 20 more were injured at the sports dome, also called the Soldier Readiness Center. According to Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks, the first shooting began at about 1:30 p.m. at a personnel and medical processing office.

Banks state that two shooters were apparently involved. There was no immediate word on who they were, nor on identities of the dead.

Banks says a second incident took place at a theater on the base about a half hour before a graduation ceremony was to take place.

Fort Hood spokeswoman Sgt. Rebekah Lampan stated that authorities believe at least two gunmen were involved in the attack on Thursday. A Fort Hood spokeswoman told the Associated Press that one shooter is in custody.

NBC affiliate KCEN-TV indicated that there may also be a third shooter. They report that a policeman was among those who were shot.

At this point the Army is leading the investigation, which also has the involvement of Homeland Security. MSNBC reports that the FBI is also on its way to the base.

Located halfway between Waco and Austin, TX, Fort Hood houses 65,000 soldiers and family members. As the largest U.S. military installation in the world, they are the home for Headquarters III Corps, First Army Division West, the 1st Cavalry Division, 4th Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade, 13th Corps Support Command, 89th Military Police Brigade, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, 21st Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat), 4th Combat Aviation Brigade and 31st Air Defense Brigade.
