CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - I don't know about you, but I don't appreciate people insulting my mother. I'm willing to bet that Jesus feels the same way.
When I saw the story last week out of Berkeley, CA and I read the words "Queering the Rosary" I immediately felt my blood begin to boil. Just retyping that degrading phrase makes me cringe. Like so many of you, I treasure our Blessed Mother and I love her deeply. The more I contemplate her life, her heart, her obedience to God, her humility (I could go on and on and on) the more I understand how irreplaceable she is in the Christian life and how lost we might be without her prayers for us. She is a one-direction compass that never fails... she is simply incapable of pointing anywhere but to her Divine Son. Her eyes are fixed on Him, and she lifts our eyes to Him as well. She is so firmly anchored in the perfect will of God that to love her can only result in deeper devotion to Christ.
She is a beautiful gift to all mankind, and an incomparable source of help and comfort to all Christians. But sadly, not even the pure and holy mother of God is sacred anymore. Now she who was ever-virgin has been hijacked for the purpose of making sexual immorality seem holy. Enter the "Queer Rosary"... blech.
The most nauseating part of this blasphemy is that the group it comes from includes some so-called Catholics, in particular a man named Eugene McMullan from Berkeley. Mr. McMullan is a theology graduate student and the founder of a group which calls itself "Catholics for Marriage Equality". He invented what he maintains is a brand-new set of mysteries for the holy rosary called the "Relational Mysteries" that casts the relationship between biblical heroes like Ruth and Naomi, and David and Jonathan in a homosexual light.
Mr. McMullen and Rev. Jim Mitulski of the homosexual-activist Metropolitan Community Church in Berkeley organized an event last May in which they led a two-part class on "Praying the Queer Rosary." It is unfathomable to me, but they managed to bring their "Queer Rosary" to the Newman Hall- Holy Spirit Parish in September. That's right - a Catholic church endorsed this disparaging sacrilege. Shame on them.
Blasphemy seems to be the hottest current trend, especially when it's directed at Catholic Christians. It's bad enough when it comes from outside the church, such as Penn and Teller's profane display of ignorance on Showtime, or the vulgar scene from Puccini's Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera House - the one in which the baritone who plays Baron Scarpia simulates the sex act with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
But when it comes from within the church, when those who profess to be Catholic distort and rewrite the truth to make it fit their activist agenda, there can be no hesitation in exposing it and denouncing it. We'd better stiffen our spines real quick because garbage like this will be coming in a steady stream for the foreseeable future. The activist homosexual agenda, the erroneous belief in giving legal equivalency to homosexual practice and calling for marriage "equality" and the alleged "right" to abortion are not now, nor will they ever be compatible with the clear teaching of the Catholic Church which confirms the truth revealed within the Natural Law. If, God forbid, the day comes when the Catholic Church is the only Christian church left standing that still defends the sanctity of life and marriage as between one man and one woman, even then the Church will not cave in and compromise the truth.
It's simple: there really can be no such thing as "Catholics for Marriage Equality". Homosexual Practice cannot make a marriage. There's no such thing as "Catholics for Choice".Killing innocent children in the womb cannot ever be a moral choice. The true Catholic faith insists on the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception throughout every precious moment of life up to and including a natural death and it insists that marriage can only exist between one man and one woman for life. Truth is not open to reinterpretation or modernization. The truth doesn't age or become outdated or irrelevant. Mankind has not "evolved" or "advanced" to the point that we have outwitted God or grown beyond His original intent for our own human flourishing.
So how much more will it take to raise the ire of faithful Catholics in America? Or perhaps more importantly, what will it take to rouse the lukewarm Catholics in America out of their indifference? While they sit silently in the pews, in their homes, in their communities timidly allowing the truth of their faith to be warped and bent into some hollowed-out façade of religion, their own spirits are dulled into compliance with the evil masquerading as equality and tolerance.
Choose this day whom you will serve, whom you will defend, whom you will honor, whom you will love. This "Queer Rosary" with its "Relational Mysteries" is blasphemy against our Blessed Mother and the holy rosary. The attempts to pervert the lives of holy men and women in Scripture, through fabricated lies, in order to legitimize homosexual activity and call it a "marriage" are scandalous and evil. It is not a sign of compassion or charity for me or anyone else to tolerate this blasphemy or simply ignore it. There are times when what is sacred must be defended publicly and vigorously. This is definitely one of them.
Start by fighting fire with prayer. I propose a nationwide "Rosary Rally" of sorts to pray for the revival of the Catholic Church in America. Gather together wherever you can to ask the Holy Spirit to rekindle the fire of faith in our nation. Pray for courage to defend the truth. Beg the Lord's mercy for our apathy and complacency. Ask Our Lady to pray for us and to teach us how to love her Son.
When? This Wednesday, October 7: the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Let's also offer a prayer of reparation for the wounds to her Immaculate Heart caused by so many blasphemies. It is time to "Stand Up" (or kneel down) and Pray!
How beautiful it would be to offer her a million spiritual flowers to show our love ~ Jesus would be so pleased, don't you think?
Whatever you do, don't be silent. Don't be indifferent. This era in history is a pivotal one, and a line is being clearly drawn. Choose this day where you will stand.
