We have sold our unborn children for our pleasures, and along with it we have sold the soul of our country.

BRONX, NY (Catholic Online) - It has been about twenty years since I first became involved in pro life work. My motivating factor was to let others who were suffering in silence from a past abortion, learn of the forgiveness and mercy of God.

Having aborted a son in my fourth month of pregnancy due to pressure from my father, I knew all too well that abortion took a human life. I saw my unborn son lying on the bed beside me after giving birth to him from a saline abortion. Of course, he was dead. That picture will forever be ingrained in my mind, a reminder of what a sinner I am and just how far we can fall without the grace of God.

Over the years, I have had to work through a lot of emotions relating to the issue of life.. As someone post abortive, I often felt like I was stuck in the middle of the debate.I did not think either side really understood why women abort, and I was eager for people to learn so that others would come forward for healing without fear and hearts would be converted. I have always believed that if we truly worked to bring souls back to Christ for no other reason but their conversion, Christ would do the rest and end abortion.

The pro abortion side drove me crazy! Aside from the obvious, that abortion is the killing of an unborn child, I felt they had no concern for those of us who were suffering as a result of abortion. I met many women in anguish psychologically, and spirituality, and many more physically damaged from "safe, legal abortion", left unable to have other children. Still to this day, in spite of the witness of more and more women to abortions harm, the pro abortion lobby does not acknowledge this damage, in fact, they continue to deny it as if it is impossible for a woman to experience suffering as a result of killing her unborn child. When did we become a nation where killing your unborn child and it bothering you is unacceptable?

Some on the pro life side also gave me occasion to weep. Some were so judgmental and acted as if women walked into the clinic to kill their children with glee. No punishment was enough to them, as if they could punish us more than we were already punishing ourselves. The phrase we "saved a baby", also left me cringing, having met so many women who could not even save their own babies under pressure from husbands, boyfriends or others who they thought loved them and had their best interests at heart..

Of course, I also knew we were the greatest sinners and only God's grace can save the unborn, or those of us involved in an abortion. If you asked those of us who have been healed, I have no doubt we would all say the same thing. We know more than anyone else, it is only by His Mercy and forgiveness that we are saved by an amazing God who values our souls as much as the souls of our unborn children.

The impact of over thirty years of abortion, has done more than kill 50 million babies in our country. It has wounded moms, dads, sibling, friends and family, and, it has done something else. It has killed our souls and our consciences. While I used to feel that women aborted amidst turmoil, (and I still think most do), I am now horrified at the callousness of many acts surrounding abortion. We hear of countless stories of violence. Husbands killing wives, boyfriends murdering girlfriends who refuse to abort, or committing acts of violence towards them. Teenagers who are more concerned about going out than about the multiple babies they have aborted before they are college bound.

I have become stunned learning about abortion "parties" that are given to raise money to kill the uunborn. According to Byard Duncan, of AlterNet, " For the price of whatever we were willing to donate, ... we could partake of baked goods, beer and dancing." Partying to pay for death. And, we are killing our unborn for not being "perfect" or even the wrong sex.

Yes, more is dying than the unborn with abortion in our current world. We have enshrined abortion and made it a god. Religions of self desire are being formed to fit our continued need to justify killing our off spring. God is twisted and mocked as we attempt to turn Him into who we want Him to be instead of who He is, love and truth. We justify our behavior turning our eyes away from Christ, fixed instead on our own reflections.

We have converted abortion from a supposed necessary evil to a supreme good. We have taken our shame and regret, and turned it into a celebration. We have fed our selfishness on the altar of material wealth and instant gratification. We have sold our unborn children for our pleasures, and along with it we have sold the soul of our country.
Mother Theresa once said, "Any country that accepts abortion, is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what it wants." After 36 years of legalized abortion, it appears our country has learned well.

But there is hope. A recent Gallop poll showed 51% of Americans now see themselves as pro life. I do not think this is surprising, in the years since Roe vs Wade there are few people abortion has not touched on a personal level. We have all experienced its destruction. In the end, as difficult as it appears at times, I know victory is ours, because it has already been won by Mercy Himself on Calvary. In the meantime we need to keep our eyes fixed on Him, day by day , knowing by His grace souls are turning back to Him and the truth of abortion, one at a time.
