SAGINAW, Michigan (Zenit) - Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Joseph Cistone to head the diocese of Saginaw.

Today the Vatican press office reported the appointment of the Philadelphia auxiliary, 60, who spent the day visiting parishes and schools in his new diocese.

Bishop Cistone replaces Bishop Robert Carlson, who was named to the Archdiocese of St. Louis on April 21.

He was born in Philadelphia, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1975. He became a monsignor in 1998.

In 2004, Monsignor Cistone was appointed auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese of Philadelphia.

He currently serves on the bishops' conference Committee for Cultural Diversity in the Church and the Committee on Budget and Finance.

On July 28, the prelate will be installed in the diocese of Saginaw, which has some 144,000 Catholics served by 100 priests, 15 permanent deacons and 111 religious.
