WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - Dr. Richard Besser is the acting Director of the CDC, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention for the United States of America.
His calm demeanor and solid response to the growing concerns over the spread of the H1N1 influenza called "swine Flu" have served this Nation well and helped to stem the growing concerns over the spread of the virus.
It was particularly because of his manner of communicating so calmly in the past that his disclosure to NBC news on this Wednesday morning, April 29, 2009, that the United States has its first Flu related death sent such shockwaves throughout the Nation. Officials have confirmed only 65 cases of the ailment in the U.S. thus far and all of them mild.
The first victim of the H1N1 influenza was a small child, a 23 month old from Texas. Acting Director Besser told the Today show that in his opinion this death did not "...indicate(s) any change in the strain of the flu."
However, this is the first case of a fatality directly related to the H1N1 influenza called "swine Flu" in the Americas outside of the Mexican mainland where more than 150 people have died and over 2,400 have been stricken with this flu.
International sources have also now confirmed that the first case of the flu has hit Germany making it the 8th Nation where the virus has been confirmed.
