VIENNA, Va. (Catholic Online) - The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation has become known by a popularization of its Acronym, "Freddie Mac". It has also been a source of serious concern for all who witness the continuing downward spiral in the financial and housing sector of our already volatile economy.

Freddie Mac was "publicly traded" but has become one of those institutions being kept afloat in this current economic crisis by the Federal Government. It was taken over on Sept. 8, 2008 as serious questions about its practices and stability depleted its base of investors and shook public confidence in its fiscal viability for the future.

Freddie Mac buys the mortgage paper on home loans from private lending institutions and then makes that paper available for resale or places it within portfolios for investment.

Now, there is shocking news concerning its leadership.

On Wednesday April 22, 2009 David Kellermann, the acting Chief Financial Officer of Freddie Mac, was found dead at his home in the Hunter Mill Estates section of Vienna, Virginia of an apparent suicide.

Spokespersons for the for the Fairfax County Police told the local Press that Mr. Kellermann was 41 years old and that they discovered his body after members of his family called their headquarters at 5 A.M. Wednesday morning.

"We were called from inside the house to come investigate an apparent suicide," said Officer Jennings to the Press. A Medical Examiner will determine the cause of the death. "We're not to give you details of the condition of the body, except to say it was an apparent suicide," Jennings said further.

When I heard the news this morning I was shocked. My family and I lived in that neighborhood years ago when I was engaged in Pro-Life work in Washington, DC and doing graduate study at the John Paul II Institute.

The neighbors interviewed indicated that Mr. Kellermann gave no indication of difficulties.

He had been with Freddie Mac for 16 years and served as its acting Chief Financial Officer since September of 2008.

Since the news broke this morning Freddie Mac released a statement which is set forth below:

"The Freddie Mac family is truly saddened by the news this morning of David Kellermann's death. We extend our deepest condolences to David's family and loved ones for this terrible personal tragedy.

David was a man of great talents. He dedicated those talents to Freddie Mac for more than 16 years, serving in many business and finance capacities before recently taking the reins as acting chief financial officer. His extraordinary work ethic and integrity inspired all who worked with him. But he will be most remembered for his affability, his personal warmth, his sense of humor and his quick wit. David was a friend to many in the Freddie Mac family, and we mourn his passing."
