ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Catholic Online) - The speculation which was lighting up the blogoshere last night concerning who would succeed Archbishop Burke in St. Louis has been put to rest. Thomas Peters of the "American Papist" was the first to break the story last night. This morning, Rocco Palmo, ever accurate and usually first in all news of this sort, reports the following on his excellent weblog "Whispers in the Loggia":
"Settling the most-awaited of the current docket of appointments, the Pope has named Bishop Robert Carlson of Saginaw as archbishop of St Louis.
"Known for his success with drumming up staggering numbers of seminarians in the two prior dioceses he's led, the 64 year-old Minnesota native -- ordained a bishop before his 40th birthday -- succeeds Archbishop Raymond Burke, who was named the global church's "chief justice" late last June.
"This morning, Benedict XVI also transferred Bishop Robert Cunningham of Ogdensburg to the bishopric of Syracuse, succeeding Bishop James Moynihan, whose resignation was accepted 22 months after he reached the canonical age-limit of 75."
The faithful of St. Louis are once again blessed with a Shepherd of extraordinary caliber, a servant leader with deep loyalty to the Lord and His Church. The new Archbishop Robert Carlson has a track record which shows him to possess a much needed gift for every missionary age, an extraordinary capacity to inspire vocations at a time when workers are so desperately needed in the Vineyard. May Archbishop Robert Carlson continue the great work of Archbishop Raymond Burke. Let us pray for him as he he says "Yes" to this new call and may the faithful of Saginaw be rewarded as well with a holy Bishop in his stead.
