Pro-Life Activist Joins Protests at Notre Dame University
FREE Catholic Classes
A familiar voice in pro-life activism, Randall Terry, has joined the chorus of those calling for a change in the commencement ceremonies for Notre Dame University.
Highlights
WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - On Saturday, March 28, Pro-Life activist Randall Terry, a Catholic convert, stood at the stone entrance to Notre Dame University and announced that he would be present in South Bend to coordinate a protest of the President Barack Obama's invitation by the school to serve as the commencement speaker in May. In addition, Notre Dame planned on conferring an honorary degree on the president.
"Our intention over the next 40-something days is to be very peaceful and very aggressive in our defense of human life," Terry told the media. "This university has betrayed Catholics and betrayed innocent blood by inviting President Obama to speak."
Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, joins a growing list of those who are actively campaigning against the president's appearance at one of the nation's most visible Catholic institutions. Catholic clergy along with many students and alumni have also voiced their opposition to the appearance.
Notre Dame students even established a website called ND Response at www.ndresponse.com.
One alumni letter sent out concludes by saying, "...it is astonishing that the University would put its Alumni in a position of having to ask themselves: 'What has happened to our University that our leaders are now willing to disregard our charism and contradict the prophetic witness we were once told was our responsibility as baptized persons who willingly embrace the Catholic Faith?'"
Terry announced his intention to be present in South Bend, Indiana, for as long as it takes for Notre Dame retract the invitation or for the president to cancel. He also called for the resignation of the University's president, Father John Jenkins and even has written a suggested letter of resignation for him which he distributed to the media
