Highlights
WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - On Tuesday March 10, 2009 a gunman in Alabama embarked on a rampage of violence which spanned two rural counties near the border with Florida.
The lone gunman killed 12 people, including members of his own family, and then burnt down his mother's house, with her inside. Finally, he turned the weapon inward, making himself his last victim. Reports indicate that the murders were the gruesome work of Michael McLendon. The man once worked at a local metal plant and lived with his mother.
On Wednesday March 11, 2009 in Stuttgart Germany, more victims were killed in a brutal and inexplicable act of violence. There are no indications yet as to why the 17 year old German shooter committed this heinous act of violence. He simply walked into his former high school and opened fire on students killing 15 people before he was killed by police.A similar shooting occurred in Germany in 2002 when another teenager killed 16 people and then took his own life.
1,000 children attend the school which is located in a suburb northeast of Stuttgart, Germany.
There are few specific details on both apparently random acts of murder and mayhem as authorities try to make some sense of the tragedies.
Both are under investigation by local authorities. We will follow reports and update our coverage of these two tragedies.
