Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - On Thursday, January 29, 2009, Edward Pentin wrote an article for "Newsmax" citing an "anonymous Vatican source".
Pentin claimed that the source informed him that the Holy Father had made the decision on the new Archbishop of New York. The announcement has been expected for a long time. Cardinal Egan has already announced his retirement.
The news of this appointment has been highly anticipated. It has produced numerous articles and analysis, as well as a slate of rumors. The Archdiocese of New York is an extraordinarily important See. The selection is being seen as a bellwether for the direction of future appointments by Pope Benedict XVI.
Oddly, news of this sort is usually "leaked" first by the king of all "Vaticanisti" bloggers, "Whispers in the Loggia".
Leading the list of those who are being considered as highly possible selections is Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee. Archbishop Dolan is deeply loved by the faithful and is a dynamically orthodox Bishop with tremendous gifts.
Pentin wrote: "The Pope has chosen an archbishop who is "dynamic, conservative and orthodox", he says - traits which Vatican watchers say best match those of Archbishop Dolan. The 59 year old prelate is said to be good with the media, genuine, and intelligent. He also has Irish ancestry, a common characteristic of previous archbishops of New York."
The blogosphere has passed this article around with a rapidity which I have rarely seen. It has already gone global and picked up an extraordinary exposure even in the "secular" alternative media.
When the information was passed on by Patrick Madrid - a very popular Catholic apologist and blogger, who founded the magazine "Envoy" and launched the "Envoy Institute" on the campus of Belmont Abbey College - it took off like a rocket.
I pass this information on because I know that our readers are greatly interested. We are watching and praying and will update the topic as soon as more information becomes available
