Highlights
WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - In an unprecedented move today, Roland Burris was rejected from assuming the former Senate seat of Barack Obama as the 111th session of congress was convened. The former attorney general of Illinois had been appointed by besieged Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill the remaining term of the president-elect.
Upon arriving at Capitol Hill, Burris, 71, was informed by the Secretary of the Senate that his credentials were not in order. He then left before the convening gavel, meeting with reporters in the rain outside the building.
Timothy W. Wright III, an attorney for Burris, told reporters, "our credentials were rejected by the secretary of the Senate. We were not allowed to be placed in the record books. We were not allowed to proceed to the floor for purposes of taking oath. All of which we think was improperly done and is against the law of this land. We will consider our options and we will certainly let you know what our decisions will be soon thereafter."
Wright indicated that legal action may be undertaken but that Burris would first seek to discuss the matter further with Senate leaders.
