BOSTON,MASS (Catholic Online) - The long time Senator from Massachusetts, Edward "Ted" Kennedy, whose years of fighting for liberal causes has earned him the name "The Liberal Lion", has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

The eyes of the Nation and the world have turned toward daily news updates ever since the Senator was taken by ambulance last weekend from the family's summer residence in Hyannis, Massachusetts to a local hospital. The ambulance responded to a 911 emergency call.

Initial anonymous reports indicated that he had complained of "flu-like" symptoms. The symptoms were later called "stroke like" by more anonymous sources. Reports in Washington DC circulated, indicating that this was a serious medical situation.

Later, the Senator was airlifted to Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital and reports indicated that it was not a stroke at all, but rather seizures. As a worried Nation prayed, the updates seemed to indicate that the family was relieved.

Story after story has emerged, even from those colleagues who vehemently disagreed with Senator Kennedy on vital policy issues, concerning what a fine and kind man he is.

Prayers and good wishes have poured in from all sources. However, the much awaited diagnosis from his treating physicians was not forthcoming.Speculation was running rampant in Washington,DC.

Now the D.C. reports have been confirmed by the diagnosis and preliminary biopsy results. Senator Ted Kennedy has a malignant glioma tumor in the left parietal-lobe of his brain. It was detected after Kennedy, 76, was airlifted to Boston on Saturday after having a seizure at his Cape Cod home.

These kinds of malignant gliomas are serious. Survival projections for the Senator have not been offered by his treating physicians. In fact, there has been no indications of what kind of treatment will be undertaken.

Dr. Lee Schwamm, vice chairman of the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Larry Ronan, Kennedy's primary care physician, indicated in a written statement released to the Press that "He has had no further seizures, remains in good overall condition, and is up and walking around the hospital,".

The Democratic Senator was first elected in 1962 to fill the unexpired term of his brother John who was elected President. He has served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 46 years as a consistent and strong voice for what is considered to be the "liberal" wing of the Democratic Party.

Senator "Ted" Kennedy has been an strong advocate for raising the minimum wage and immigration reform in the most recent Senate term. He has always been a strong advocate for educational and health care causes. Throughout his long Senate career he has been highly respected, even by his opponents.

Senator Kennedy wields substantial power in the Senate, currently serving as the Chair of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

He is a vocal and strong supporter of the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, along with other members of his family, and has served as a surrogate on the campaign trail.

His family has been at his side ever since he was hospitalized but have made no statements to the Press.
