LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - An earthquake measuring approximately 5.2 in magnitude gave a shocking early morning greeting to people in the Midwestern region of the United States.

Of course, such an event is highly unusual, but they do appear, according to experts, every few years. The center of the quake was located approximately six miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Indiana.

The effects could be felt in Chicago, as downtown skyscrapers shook, and as far away as Cincinnati, Ohio.

Early reports indicated that the quake may have involved the Wabash fault which extends north from the New Madrid fault outside of Carmel, Illinois.

The last such tremor to hit the area was in 2002 when a quake of 5.0 magnitude was felt.

No-one was injured and initial reports indicate relatively little damage.
