LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Part of the U.S. strategy against ISIS is to destroy their command structure. This requires the systematic elimination of their commanders. While the Pentagon and CIA have been good at this task, it is proven difficult in the Islamic State.
One commander, Omar the Chechen, also known as Omar al-Shishani, has been reported dead, nine different times. Each time, he emerged unscathed. This time, the Islamic State is confirming his death.
Al-Shishani may be the best commander the Islamic State has. He was legendary for capturing large swathes of territory using just a few men. Such economy of force is uncommon and requires tactical genius to manage.
His skill on the battlefield made him a prime target for U.S. and Coalition forces. U.S. forces targeted him several times, but never quite managed to kill him. A strike on March 4 allegedly did the trick. The Pentagon reported the strike was a success at the time, but ISIS denied it.
Now the Islamic State has admitted his death via an affiliated news outlet.
According to all reports, he was killed in Shirqat, near Mosul. U.S. and Iraqi forces have continued to advance in the region as they work to retake Mosul. It is probable that Al-Shishani was in the area directing the resistance.
His death may suppress IS recruitment from Chechnya.
The United States has issued a reward of $5 million for information leading to Al-Shishani's capture or death.
