LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Days after burying Mansour in an undisclosed location in Afghanistan, the Taliban announced their new leader.
Despite other, more experienced, candidates, the Taliban surprised everyone when it chose Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada, an inexperienced man in his late fifties, to lead their group.
The Taliban, presumably interested in making their new leader sound younger and stronger, insisted he was 47-years-old. To assert his new authority, Akhundzada gathered Taliban leaders to announce there would be no peace talks with the Afghan government.
Following the meeting, one leader described Akhubdzada as "quiet, deeply patient, and a listener."
The decision to appoint Akhundzada as the next leader was an effort to "bring back the era of Mullah Mohammad Omar," who was the original leader when the terrorist organization was created in 1994.
Omar's time brought with it "a simple life, loyalty, and terror on enemies," Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Mansour, an informant for the United States, shared.
Unity among the Taliban and going back to the origins of the group are of utmost importance to the Taliban - and many believe Akhundzada is just the man to do it.
Former Taliban diplomat Habibullah Fawzi explained: "One of the reasons that the Taliban chose Haibatullah as leader is that as a religious scholar, he can reunite different factions of the Taliban and prevent disintegration."
