LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Kurdish forces discovered the tunnels when Sinjar was reclaimed last December. The tunnels dipped as far as thirty-feet-deep and many had been wired with electricity.
Since their discovery, seventy tunnels have been revealed, with Kurdish and Iraqi forces believing the corridors could stretch the entire span of the town.
Wais Faiq, the head of the Sinjar town council told the International Business Times, "There is a tunnel under every alley, street and public building that remains intact. ...[They] dug so many [tunnels] to the extent that they completely destroyed the infrastructure of Sinjar.
"This is clear evidence the terrorist Daesh group is aware of Sinjar's geographical importance as it can link Raqqa to Iraq and for that reason they kept a tight grip on Sinjar."
Faiq also reported ammunition boxes, medicine and bombs were discovered within the tunnels.
Sadly, 70 older Yazidi women were discovered in a grave within Sinjar, serving as a testament of the horrors ISIS bestowed upon its captives.General Sami Mulla Mohammed Bosli, Sinjar's deputy operations commander, explained "The tunnels are not only in Sinjar, but in any place they take. They use them to hide from coalition air strikes. Their defensive plan is to go to these tunnels when the coalition drones come in."
Daily Mail reported some of the tunnels are believed to be rigged with explosives, but the network is so extensive that authorities are not certain.
On Thursday, coalition forces launched 14 airstrikes against ISIS in both Iraq and Syria, resulting in destroyed vehicles, supply caches, snipers and several key attack positions.
The Combined Joint Task Force released a statement Friday morning to reveal six strikes in Syria hit petroleum pipelines, damaged another tunnel system and destroyed a "heavy machine gun."
