Justice for Kayla Mueller?: Umm Sayyaf tried in U.S.

Though Sayyaf remains in Iraqi custody, she has been tried and found guilty in the United States.

Nisreen Assad Ibrahim Bahar, also known as Umm Sayyaf, teamed up with her husband, Abu Sayyaf, to hold several women captive for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the man guilty of repeatedly raping and torturing U.S. relief worker Kayla Mueller. Since al-Baghdadi's death, Bahar was captured and tried in U.S. courts.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - When Mueller joined her boyfriend Omar Alkhani on a journey to Aleppo, Syria, she had goals of making a difference in the war-torn country. Unfortunately, as the couple exited a Doctors Without Borders hospital, the two were abducted by ISIS.

Alkhani was released after two months of beatings, but Mueller was forced to serve as a sexual slave to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who treated her in the most inhumane of ways for the next two-and-a-half years until she was killed.

Fox News reported Bahar was captured in Iraq after her husband was killed. Since her capture, she has been held in an Iraqi prison and was tried in United States courts on Tuesday.

The Justice Department released information concerning the trial, stating Bahar was supported ISIS members in a "conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization" that resulted in Mueller's death.

When she was captured, Bahar admitted she and Sayyaf held Mueller and other female hostages captive and that Mueller was often raped by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who often stayed at the Sayyaf home.

According to the FBI affidavit, Bahar claimed responsibility for the captives
Though she was aware of the way hostages were treated, she failed to care. She just told them she would kill them should any of them choose to disobey. Bahar and Sayyaf were suspected of working within the sex trade industry within ISIS-controlled areas.

Assistant Attorney General John P. Carlin stated: "We fully support the Iraqi prosecution of Sayyaf and will continue to work with authorities there to pursue our shared goal of holding Sayyaf accountable for her crimes.

"At the same time, these charges reflect that the US justice system remains a powerful tool to bring to bear against those who harm our citizens abroad. We will continue to pursue justice for Kayla and for all American victims of terrorism."

Though the men who raped her are dead and the woman responsible for keeping her captive has been tried, this particular case is closed. Unfortunately, thousands of women across the Middle East continue to fall prey to ISIS. Please pray that Mueller's family can be consoled and that God intervenes to abolish the terrorist regime.
