LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "The clearance of the government center is a significant accomplishment and is the result of many months of hard work by the Iraqi Army, the Counter Terrorism Service, the Iraqi Air Force, local and federal police and tribal fighters," United States coalition spokesman Col. Steve Warren said, according to CNN.
The latest victory is an enormous symbolic win against ISIS, but the next moves are even more critical. As the Iraqi soldiers celebrated the "liberation" of the city, it is important to remember that ISIS more than likely remains just north of the city and the possibility of the terror group regrouping and attacking is high.
"Ramadi will remain exposed to counterattacks by ISIS, particularly from the north from ISIS-held Hit district, if (Iraqi security forces) shift forces away from Ramadi to focus on other operations," explained the Institute for the Study of War.
According to CNN, the city of Ramadi holds a lot of strategic importance for ISIS; it has roads that lead into Jordan and Syria. However, Rasoul stands confident with his military and believes they will retake other ISIS-captured cities soon.
"We will liberate all the other places like we liberated Juif al Nasser and Tikrit and Baiji and other areas," he said.
Despite the latest victory against ISIS, a new CNN/ORC poll unfolds that Americans "are more likely to say that terrorists are winning the war against the United States than they have been at any point since the September 11 attacks."
