LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Reuters reported the influx of Iranian troops to Syria as told by two Lebanese sources.

One source familiar with political and military developments claimed, "The (Russian) air strikes will in the near future be accompanied by ground advances by the Syrian army and its allies. It's possible that the coming land operations will be focused in the Idlib and Hama countryside.

Both sources agreed the operation was an attempt to regain land Syrian President Bashar al-Assad lost to rebels. The move indicates an alliance between Russia, Syria, Iran and Hezbollah military.

The second source said, "The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria: soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisers ... we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more." The source added Iraqis would be participating in the operation as well.

To date, Iranian military support for Assad has presented itself in the form of military advisers. However, Iran sent Shi'ite militia fighters -including Iraqis and Afghans- to fight alongside Syria's government forces.

The Russian air force began their air strikes on Wednesday. They targeted areas near Homs and Hama, where Assad's military has been fighting insurgent groups. However, Islamic State groups are based in the north and east of the country, leaving several questions in the wake of their attacks.
