Slammed as an action "unsafe and unprofessional," an Iranian warship reportedly pointed weapons on a U.S. military helicopter while conducting a routine, according to CNN. MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - According to the official, the incident happened two weeks ago at the Gulf of Aden, July 25. They believe standard on-deck machine guns were pointed at the U.S. helicopter and the coalition warship by the Iranian crewmembers.
The warship, a regular Iranian Navy Vosper-class frigate, was just few yards away from the coalition warship and the chopper just landed on deck when they pointed the weapons. However, witnesses noticed there was a cameraman behind the Iranian crew.
"Were they just trying to get cool pictures pointing at us? Were they making a propaganda film? Was some guy taking pictures to send to his girlfriend? We don't know," said the official. The interaction was noted to have lasted for about a minute without any violent encounter and everything went on as planned.
The defense official explained there were no serious encounters between the U.S. Navy and Iranian military vessels lately, but a U.S. ship recently sounded their horns warning the Iranian warships were coming too close, which eventually moved farther away, according to CNN.
The Gulf of Aden is considered hostile, as piracy and terrorism is rampant on the waters, adding to political instability within the region, Yemen on the north and Somalia at the south. However, the U.S. Navy said the interactions between them and Iranian military vessels are generally conducted in "safe and professional" manner.
