MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - A Christian tourist touring around the grounds of the Holy site on Jerusalem's Temple was attacked by Muslim worshipers in the area, because he was carrying an Israeli flag.
A Frenchman, believed to be in his 30's, was attacked by four Palestinians. The four East Jerusalem men were immediately detained by police, according to reports.
According to the Agence France Press, the tourist, whose name was kept private, sustained injuries and wounds in his head and could face charges of disrupting public order. The tourist allegedly waved the Israeli flag inside the Holy grounds, provoking the Palestinian men to attack him.
Israeli regulations do not allow Jews to overtly pray or display Israeli symbols on the Temple mount, in order to prevent violent responses from the Muslims who stay and visit the site. The area is considered the holiest place in Judaism and the third-holiest place in Islam.
A video surfaced online featuring the tourist being escorted away by the police. A background voice of a child can be heard in the video shouting "Allahu akbar."
The incident occurred after a clash between Palestinians and Israeli police. The Palestinians apparently threw stones at the police during the protest over an 18-month-old child killed in an arson attack on his home in the West Bank.
Clashes during the Jewish fast day of Tisha B'Av were also reported, where Palestinians were caught stockpiling Molotov cocktails, fireworks and rocks that were to be used on Jewish worshippers visiting the site during the holiday.
Reports also claim that Islamist groups in Israel pay Palestinians to sit on the Temple Mount and harass Jewish tourists.
