LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - This execution took place before a mosque in the port city of Derna in northern Libya, which had been previously taken by Islamic State fighters in October of 2014.
Photos released of the event show Abdulnabi Shurgawi, a soldiers with the internationally recognized Libyan government, in an orange jumpsuit, which has become a common sight in Islamic State propaganda, being dragged into a public square by black clad fighters and murdered.
Another photo shows the murderer holding the decapitated head up in front of the crowd of young boys, who get to watch the brutal killing for "education purposes."
Shurgawi was captured by the Islamic State earlier this week and apparently was charged with apostasy, which means not practicing Islam in a way agreeable to the Islamic State.
The images of the murder were released by the "Wilayat Barqa" Islamic State cell, along with information about the murder and presence of the children.
The Islamic State is infamous for its abuse of children, routinely having young boys present at executions to toughen them of in order to be effective soldiers or martyrs for the Islamic caliphate. The goal is to create a network of callous and murderous fanatical Muslims which could last for generations.
Libya has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011, when former dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed. In 2014, the government that had taken over and was being internationally recognized as the legitimate Libyan government was forced to flee Tripoli after Islamist groups captured the city.
