The Obama administration steps on more toes: U.S. moves from Israeli-Palestinian peace talks toward United Nations forced two-state resolution in Middle East crisis

The continuous efforts to get Israelis and Palestinians to reach a peaceful agreement on land has potentially reached its peak. The United States is edging closer to supporting the United Nations Security Council in forcing a final peace settlement, a lasting two-state solution.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - After years of being strictly against the U.N. efforts, the U.S. has expressed signs of agreeing with the decision.

Prior to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's re-election, the U.S. informed its diplomatic partners that it would continue holding off on any moves that would force Israel to abide by the U.N. However, once Netanyahu was announced winner, the U.S. began showing a willingness to a U.N. resolution.

"We're currently evaluating our approach. We're not going to prejudge what we would do if there was a U.N. action," explained State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki while not ruling out the U.S. supporting the U.N. resolution.

According to Foreign Policy, both Democratic and Republican administrations have resisted a U.N. interference on the Middle East crisis for decades. "They have argued consistently that an enduring peace can only be achieved through direct negotiations between parties."

However, Netanyahu appears to have pulled away from anything involving direct negotiations, as his per-election declaration stated he would never allow the creation of a Palestinian state.

"The fact that we have a government in Israel publicly opposing a two-state solution just reinforces our position that this conflict must be handled by the international community," Maen Rashid Areikat said.

The proposition of a two-state solution falls in to line just as Palestinians are set to join the International Criminal Court, where they would activate plans on holding Israel accountable for war crimes during the was in Gaza, according to the Palestine Liberation Organization's top diplomat in the United States.

"The Israelis will probably resist and say this is a bad idea, but they could also be convinced that this is better than the alternative," said Ilan Goldenberg, a former member of the Obama administrations Mideast peace team to FP, describing a two-state solution as a better alternative than facing ICC charges for war crime.

However, European allies have expressed the importance of a comprehensive peace settlement, despite U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warning the U.S. would block any resolutions put to vote.

"I think they probably just want to see how it pans out," said one U.N.-based diplomat. "But certainly the message we got back in December was that they might be able to show more flexibility after the election."
