VATICANO (ACI Prensa) - La tragedia se produjo ayer jueves 20 de septiembre cuando, por causas que se desconocen, un ferri con al menos 400 personas a bordo naufrago cuando atravesaba el lago entre las islas de Ukerewe y Ukara.

Alrededor de 50 personas fueron rescatadas con vida, sin embargo, se desconoce el numero total de pasajeros del barco, por lo que la cifra de fallecidos podria ascender. Las labores de rescate continuan en estos momentos, segun afirmo el Gobierno de Tanzania.

En su mensaje, enviado por el Secretario de Estado del Vaticano, Cardenal Pietro Parolin, a las autoridades civiles y eclesiasticas del pais en nombre del Pontifice, el Santo Padre afirma sentirse entristecido "al enterarse del tragico accidente de ferri ocurrido en el Lago Victoria, junto a la isla de Ukara".

Francisco expresa "su solidaridad con los que lloran la pérdida de sus seres queridos y temen por las vidas de los desaparecidos".

Ademas, invoca "las bendiciones divinas, fortaleza y consuelo para todos los afectados, y ofrece aliento a las autoridades civiles y al personal de emergencia en sus esfuerzos de rescate".
