LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the < ahref="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/11/29/german-intelligence-officer-arrested-islamist-plot-raising-fears/">Telegraph, the unnamed official made a "partial confession" Der Spiegel, a German newspaper, reported.

Another officer claimed the suspect tried passing "sensitive information about the BfV (Germany's domestic security agency), which could lead to a threat in the office."

A BfV spokesman added: "He is accused of making Islamist remarks online under a false name, and offering internal information during chats."

The man "behaved inconspicuously" prior to his arrest but his job to gather intelligence on Islamist extremists in Germany has come into question.

Online chats were discovered between the suspected official and Islamists. He apparently attempted to recruit them to the agency to carry out an attack on "non-believers" using bombs "in the name of Allah."

The BfV discovered he used several usernames online and though his activities were uncovered nearly a month ago, officials waited until they had every shred of evidence necessary to bring him in.

Breitbart reported the suspect admitted to joining the BfV specifically to infiltrate and gather information from the agency.

The suspect was a bank clerk and had secretly converted to Islam - so secretive was he that his own wife was unaware of his new allegiance.

When authorities finally moved, they set up a fake account, which the suspect contacted, believing it was a fellow Islamist.

He sent BfV officers information and attempted to recruit them to the plot, cinching his fate and closing his own case.

The BfV believes there are roughly 40,000 Islamists in Germany, including 9,200 extreme conservatives known as Salafists.

Hans-Georg Maassen, who leads BfV, was interviewed by Rueters, where he stated: "We remain a target of Islamic terrorism and we have to assume that Islamic State or other terrorist organisations will carry out an attack in Germany if they can."
