LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The site is called Must Farm. There could have been as many as 10 wooden round houses erected on stilts next to water. Up to 30 people may have called the site home 3,000 years ago.
But one day a fire broke out, possibly set deliberately. Within an hour the entire settlement was burned to the ground. The residents did not rebuild. Everything was left to settle into the silt where the unique properties of the environment preserved it.
Wooden beams, fabric, pots with food in them were all preserved in the silt. Even bronze weapons, including swords and spear-points have been found. A bronze axe still looks bronze. Fabric looks like it was woven recently.
Glass beads hint at an eastern origin, possibly from Syria or Turkey. The discovery reveals trade was booming across a very wide area, even 3,000 years ago.
The pottery contains traces of porridge. Bones from boar, deer and fish reveal the meats they enjoyed.
Archaeologists also discovered footprints, both human and cattle, preserved in the nearby sediment.
The site offers an exceptional look into Bronze Age life. Far from being unwashed barbarians, the people of the period were surprisingly sophisticated. They were well-off with ample food supplies, robust farms and animal husbandry.
The excavation is moving towards its conclusion. The private owners of the site will retake possession before the end of July. It is unclear what will happen to the site once it is back in private hands.
