'Dare to dream that the dawn is breaking on an independent United Kingdom.'

On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a vote in a referendum on whether the country should leave the European Union. Shortly after the votes were tallied, Britain's Prime Minister, David Cameron, made a shocking announcement.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Britain has been considering an exit from the European Union (EU) for quite some time now. Many believe the strong economy will only grow stronger while others think it best to remain part of the world's largest economic free-trade zone.

Britain's citizens are almost perfectly divided on the issue, as seen by the extremely close vote. 48.1 percent of the UK voted to remain part of the European Union, while 51.9 percent voted to leave.

Existing trade and immigration rules will continue until the conclusion of the withdrawal process, which is expected to be both ugly and complex.

Britain helped found the European Union and the EU will result in an exacerbation of the group's already inflamed issues concerning slow growth, high unemployment rates, the migrant crisis, Greece's debt and the situation in the Ukraine.

According to The New York Times, Thierry de Montbrial, the founder and executive chairman of the French Institute of International Relations, explained: "The main impact will be massive disorder in the E.U. system for the next two years.

"There will be huge political transition costs, on how to solve the British exit, and the risk of a domino effect or bank run from other countries that think of leaving."

As the implications of Britain's exit from the EU become a reality, Britain's Prime Minister stood outside 10 Downing Street to announce he was no longer the right fit for Britain.

"The country has just taken part in a giant democratic exercise - perhaps the biggest in our history," Cameron stated. "Over 33 million people - from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar - have all had their say. ...The British people have voted to leave the European Union, and their will must be respected.

"...The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered. It was not a decision that was taken lightly, not least because so many things were said by so many different organizations about the significance of this decision. So there can be no doubt about the result.

"...We must now prepare for a negotiation with the European Union. This will need to involve the full engagement of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments to ensure that the interests of all parts of our United Kingdom are protected and advanced.

"But above all this will require strong, determined and committed leadership. I am very proud and very honored to have been prime minister of this country for six years ... I have also always believed that we have to confront big decisions - not duck them.

"...I fought this campaign in the only way I know how - which is to say directly and passionately what I think and feel - head, heart and soul. I held nothing back. ... But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path, and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.

"I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months, but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination. ...I will attend the European Council next week to explain the decision the British people have taken and my own decision.

"The British people have made a choice. That not only needs to be respected - but those on the losing side of the argument, myself included, should help to make it work."

Following Cameron's announcement, London immediately moved to find a successor. Currently, Boris Johnson, the former mayor of London who was among the leaders of the Leave campaign, is among the most likely candidates.

Though Johnson has already been listed among the best candidates, he admitted he was sad to see Cameron stepping down and described him as an "extraordinary politician."
