Non-pork eaters in a French school are ordered to wear red disks at meal time reviving chilling memories of Nazi segregation

Jewish and Muslim students at the Piedallous primary school in Auxere, Burgundy were ordered to wear disks around their necks. The incident brought with it memories of Nazi segregation and caused an uproar.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - Daily Mail reported parents were furious as the French school forced its students to wear colored disks around their necks in a move reminiscent of Nazi segregation.

The disks were either red or yellow to indicate lunchtime food restrictions, specifically by Jewish and Muslim students.
According to parents, the disks were similar to the yellow starts Jews were forced to wear under Nazi occupation. Several parents decided to remove their children from the school.
Children who could not eat pork were ordered to wear red disks around their necks while those who could not eat meat had to wear yellow disks. Parents were both offended and disappointed with the new rule, saying "No one has the right to impose this on children."
School officials claimed that the incident only happen once and was stopped after the realized it was a "clumsy" move on their part.
Council spokesman Christian Sautier said, "only 18 out of 1,500 pupils at school were made to wear the colored disks. It was an isolated, clumsy and unfortunate initiative that lasted only one day. It was put into effect by canteen staff without informing local authorities, who ended it immediately."
School food for Jewish and Muslim pupils has been a divisive issue in France for a while. Other incidents include disputes when several mayors ordered school canteens to stop offering non-pork options to students and the banning of wearing headscarves and other religious clothing in state schools. Wearing full-face Islamic veils in public have also been prohibited in public after a law was introduced in 2011.
