HOLLYWOOD, CA (Catholic Online) - Refugees are facing several problems inside overcrowded refugee centers across the country as women and children experience rape, sexual abuse and assault from their fellow refugees.
Women's right groups and politicians have reported several assaults against women and children in at least one camp. They believe that the incidents are already widespread but remain to be unreported to the police. Some women who are unaccompanied inside refugee camps are seen as "fair game" by male refugees who see themselves as superior to women. Men and women mixed inside refugee asylums are considered the largest contributors in the increasing number of assaults and abuse.
Reports were released after German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced earlier this month that there is "no limit" to the number of migrants that her country would accommodate. Currently, a total of one million migrants this year are expected to be received by Germany. However, the country has also imposed temporary border controls.
Asylum centers continue to allow men, women and children to sleep next to each other and to even use the same showers and toilets that offer no privacy for refugees. In one area in Western Germany -an old US military base in Giessen- a total of 5,000 asylum seekers have been crammed into the base. Rapes, abuse cases and even forced prostitution has been reported in the area.
Women's right groups claims these incidents remains unreported and are tolerated inside the refugee camps.
