Majority of migrants entering Europe NOT Syrian refugees

Only one in five migrants are from Syria

The migrant crisis hitting Europe has driven headlines over the past month, tugging at the heartstrings of people wanting to help desperate refugees running from a war-torn country. However, new reports from Europe show that "only one in five migrants claiming asylum" are actually from Syria.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Out of the 213,000 migrant arrivals in Europe during April, May and June, only 44,000 of them were running from the Syrian civil war.

"These figures make extremely disturbing reading. The whole argument has been made that this influx is all real refugees from Syria whereas this adds to the substantial evidence that there are a large number of economic migrants who are aiming for a better life," stated Sir Bill Cash from Tory.

Over half a million migrants have traveled to Europe this year. 156,000 came in August alone. Figures from Eurostat, Europe's official statistical agency, show from April to June, migration doubled the numbers from the same period in 2014.

The number of Afghans claiming asylum went from 6,300 to 27,000. 17,700 claims were from Albanians, "whose country is at peace," according to the Daily Mail. 13,900 applicants were from Iraq, which is being controlled by the brutal Islamic State.

Instead of settling into the country they first reach, the migrants are making the dangerous trips to the more wealthy northern states of Europe.

"This exposes the lie peddled in some quarters that vast numbers of those reaching Europe are from Syria," said David Davies, Tory MP for Monmouth. "Most people who are escaping the war will go to camps in Lebanon or Jordan. Many of those who have opted to risk their lives to come to Europe have done so for economic reasons."

According to the Daily Mail, more than 250,000 migrants have reached Greece and Italy.

Last month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that any Syrian who reached Germany could claim asylum.

However, when the amount of people became uncontrollable and unexpected, Berlin shut its borders, sending the surrounding countries, like Austria and Hungary into chaos.

Hungary's shut down of borders and razor wire fence along the border is not helping them deter the growing number of migrants, as other countries are rejecting them and sending them back to Hungary.

Croatia has received 14,000 migrants in two days, and has begun moving others to the Hungarian border, closing seven of eight road crossing to Serbia.

Britain has received 7,470 asylum seekers between April and June, but are now being criticized for failing to take in more migrants. According to the Daily Mail, David Cameron announced the UK will shelter 20,000 Syrians directly from refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon, but will not take those already in Europe.

"Claiming asylum must not be viewed as an easy means of settlement by those who are not actually refugees. We need systems which keep out unfounded claims so we can all respond more quickly and effectively to those genuinely in need of refuge," expressed a Britain Home Office spokesman. "That is why the UK is focused on resettling genuine Syrian refugees directly from the region. This will ensure we are taking in the most vulnerable people and deter people from attempting the perilously journeys which have already led to so many tragic deaths."
