Personally nominated two popular cardinals

The Vatican has released a list of participants for synod on the family, which will be taking place from October 4 to the 25 this year.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - Pope Francis has personally nominated Cardinal Walter Kasper and retired Cardinal Godfried Danneels among a few others.

Cardinal Kasper is known for many things and most recently he has been mentioned in relation to his book Mercy: The Essence of the Gospel and the Key to Christian Life, which he wrote in 2014.

When asked how mercy is key to understanding God, Kasper replied:

"The doctrine on God was arrived at by ontological understanding -God is absolute being and so on- which is not wrong. But the biblical understanding is much deeper and more personal ... God does not answer to the demands of our rules. Mercy is the faithfulness of God to his own being as love. Because God is love. And mercy is the love revealed to us in concrete deeds and words. So mercy becomes not only the central attribute of God, but also the key of Christian existence."

Cardinal Danneels shocked when he attempted to convince Belgian King Baudouin to sign an abortion bill into law back in 1990. In an interview conducted April this year, Danneels only said the Belgian abortion law was "unacceptable" and should be "marked by a black stone ... not only because of what the law says but because of the slippery slope which is turning abortion into an ordinary act."

With Cardinal Kasper, a known conservative, and Cardinal Danneels, a "liberal" cardinal, in attendance, it is clear Pope Francis expects informed opinions from a variety of people.

Other personal nominations to attend the synod on the family are Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Italy Mgr. Bruno Forte.

Belgium elected Bishop Johan Bonny to attend and Britain nominated Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia and Bishop Peter Doyle.

A full list of participants is listed in Italian here.
