MURCIA, SPAIN (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Spanish homosexual organization has submitted a legal complaint of "homophobia" to the nation's attorney general after a bioethics professor called sodomy a sexual perversion and said that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
According to local media reports, Professor Gloria Maria Tomas of the Catholic University of Murcia was speaking at a conference when she said that homosexual behavior is "intrinsically disordered" and that homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders "for political motives."
Tomas clarified, however, that she believes homosexuals have "an innate ontological dignity, inalienable and indivisible." While homosexuality isn't caused exclusively by genetic factors, she said, "a substantial number of men and women have instinctive homosexual tendencies that, in many cases, are a difficult trial for them."
The homosexualist organization COLEGAS, a federation of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals have submitted a legal complaint of "intolerance and homophobia" to the nation's attorney general in response to the statements.
Rafael Salazar, president of COLEGAS, called the statements "unconnected and incoherent" and claimed that Tomas' reasoning was "more appropriate for a high school student than a university professor." He asked the attorney general to arrange for "urgent psychological treatment" for professor Tomas, to enable her to "overcome her fears and traumas." He demanded that such statements not be allowed with "impunity."
Although homosexuality was de-listed as a mental disorder by the American Psychological Association following a vote during a 1973 meeting, not all psychologists in the United States agree with the decision, which critics regard as a political response to pressure brought to bear by homosexual activists during the early 1970s.
According to numerous peer-reviewed studies published in scientific journals, homosexual behavior is correlated with higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases, various forms of cancer, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and suicide, and is associated with lack of healthy bonding with the parent of the same sex.
