VATICAN CITY (Zenit) - The heroic virtue of Sister Maria Troncatti, a Salesian who served the indigenous peoples of Ecuador, has been recognized by the Congregation for Saints' Causes.

The decree was presented today by Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of that dicastery, in the presence of the newly elected superior-general of Sister Troncatti's congregation, the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

Sister Troncatti is the ninth member of this religious family to be declared venerable, following Margarita Occhiena, the mother of St. John Bosco.

The Salesian news agency explained that Sister Troncatti (1883-1969) lived with the Shuar population of southeast Ecuador for more than 40 years, carrying out "an enormous work of evangelization, in the midst of various kinds of risks."

The woman religious died in 1969 in a plane crash.

The diocesan report on a possible miracle attributed to Sister Troncatti has already been turned into the Vatican congregation.
