MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The outdoors of the Bangkok Shrine in the popular Ratchaprason district experienced one of the most horrific acts of terrorism in that country. Four foreigners and several others were killed during the bombing.
The attack will leave a scar to the country's tourist industry. "It was like a meat market. There were bodies everywhere. Some were shredded. There were legs, where heads were supposed to be. It was horrific," stated Marko Cunningham, a paramedic present at the site during the aftermath, describing the scene.
Although authorites are not completely sure on who was behind the bombing or the reason behind the tragic event, the Thai police are currently hunting for a suspect caught on camera who may be connected, according to CNN.
The suspect was scene in one clip with a backpack near the shrine, and in the next he no longer had the backpack.
"We are not sure if it is politically motivated, but they aim to harm our economy and we will hunt them down," expressed Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. Government officials believe the attack was aimed at the foreign tourists in the area, bringing damage to one of the excelling industries in the country.
The bomb was identified as a pipe bomb containing 3kg of TNT. The victims were literally blown into pieces during the explosion, as described by witnesses.
Several reports on where the bomb was hidden have surfaced. Some claim the explosives were stuffed inside a tube and then wrapped with a white cloth before being detonated. Others claim that the pipe was smuggled into the shrine and left under a bench, or it was strapped onto a motorcycle, causing several passing cars to explode. An electronic circuit is also believed to have caused the attack, which was later found 30 yards away from the area.
Bomb disposal groups found two more explosive devices in the area, which were defused.
Islamic militants have carried out many attacks in other parts of the Southeast Asia, including an incident back in 2002 in Bali, killing 202 people. However, Thailand was never a suspected target for these terrorists.
