Critics call out censorship.

Internet porn has finally been officially banned by the Indian government, unfortnately raising up the question of censorship once again. Reuters reported that hundreds of adult websites have been blocked in avoidance of pornography becoming a social nuisance, according to a government spokesperson. The ban has ignited debates on censorship and freedom in the world's largest democracy.

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - "Free and open access to porn websites has been brought under check. We don't want them to become a social nuisance," said spokesperson N.N. Kaul at the Department of Telecommunications.

On the grounds of morality and decency, Internet service providers were mandated to block 857 websites listed in a 17-page order, which was leaked to freedom of speech activists. Just over the weekend, several porn websites were reported inaccessible, with #Pornban trending on Twitter.

After the hearing, regarding the fueling of sex crimes through Internet porn, the Supreme Court rejected the motion to order and impose the ban, saying "individuals should be free to access such websites in private."

However, according to Kaul, the Supreme Court asked the home ministry to submit its perspective on the case, which passed a letter to the telecommunications secretary, which was then acted upon through the order. However, activists pointed that the order is a form of censorship, taking over the private activities of individuals.

"Porn ban is anti-freedom, impractical, not enforceable. Politically not very smart too. Avoidable. Let's not manage people's private lives," tweeted best-selling novelist Chetan Bhagat. The country, which has the second largest number of Internet users in the world, still considers itself a highly conservative country.

According to Pornhub, an adult website, India ranked fifth for the number of daily visitors last year. The site is included in the ban.

Regardless of all the censorship claims, India is taking a step in a positive direction. Porn is against God's word.

"14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." James 1:14-15 (NIV)
