HONOLULU, Hawaii (Catholic Online) - People on the East Coast of the United States awakened to apocalyptic images on their television screens as every news channel covered reports of the largest earthquake to hit Japan since reporting on such events began. The quake struck the Nation at 2:46 p.m. local time (12:46 a.m. ET). The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 8.9. Japan's metereological agency reported an earlier measurement of 8.4.(Japan Earthquake Appeal: Help those affected by the earthquake in Japan. We are accepting donations to support our online support efforts in Japan and worldwide. Please donate to help survivors of this emergency. Click Here to Donate - https://www.catholic.org/donation/ )People in Hawaii are preparing for one of the results of this severe quake, a tsunami. The tsunami wave is estimated to strike Hawaii at 2:59 a.m. local time (7:59 a.m. ET). The earthquake in Japan was followed by extraordinary aftershocks, at least five, one of which measured 7.1 in magnitude. Tremors from the quake and the aftershocks could be felt as far away as bejing, China. Fortunately, the Nation of Japan has prepared, at least in their building construction, for such devastation. In Tokyo, large office buildings shook violently but the devastation was less than what might have occurred otherwise. Latest reports in Japan place the number of dead at sixty with injuries numbering in the hundreds. Of course, these estimates will change as the effects of this devastation become clear. Compounding the horrid news of the quake was the further bad news that it unleashed a 13 foot tsunami. This massive wave, which looked like something out of a science fiction movie, hit Japan's northeastern coast wiping away in its wake buildings, vehicles, boats and tons of debris.
Fires were triggered up and down the coast and a nuclear emergency has been triggered due to the potential impact of the events on one of Japans nuclear facitilities.
