A vicious mob of supporters for embattled Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, stormed a Catholic church during Mass and assaulted the Archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino. There were some injuries reported, but the Archbishop was shielded by his attendants who guarded him with their bodies.

The attack took place on April 12, following the traditional procession of St. Paul, the Nazarene.

The attacking mob was made of Chavistas, paramilitary civilians who support socialism and are hostile to the Church. The Archbishop was attacked after calling for freedom from dictatorship.

Following the brazen attack, the paramilitary socialists (terrorists) looted the church. Several journalists were also injured in the attack.

During the past week, which is Holy Week in the Catholic Church, vandals have spray painted death threats on the walls of churches across the country, calling for "death to priests."

It appears possible that martyrdom may occur if the situation in Venezuela does not improve. Most Venezuelan citizens are hungry and dealing with chronic shortages of basic items, such as food and toilet paper. The shortages have been caused by government mismanagement of the command economy in that country. By interfering with free market forces, the government has caused long-term shortages and economic chaos. Venezuelan currency has become worthless as a result of hyperinflation.

Unfortunately, the Church bears the brunt of frustration for people because it is an easy target, and its clergy are asking the government to do its duty and protect the people while respecting basic human rights, something socialist governments often struggle to do.
