LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - Henrique Afonso is a member of the House of Representatives in Brazil. He was elected to office as a member of the Brazilian Workers' Party.
He is now an evangelical Protestant Christian.
In keeping with his convictions, informed by his faith, he has become an ardent opponent of efforts to give homosexual paramours equal status with marriage. He also openly supports the right to life for all human beings from conception to natural death.
He has passionately expressed his concerns for what he maintains are the causes of the continuing destruction of the Brazilian family, liberalized abortion, increased homosexual practice, child prostitution, increased drug usage, high divorce rates and corrupted media messages.
A branch of his own party has now called for his ouster and sanction. They represent the GLBT wing of that party, advocating for homosexuals, lesbians, bi-sexuals, and 'transgendered' persons. They have asked that the party oust him from office for violating the constitution.
Alfonso was a militant communist but returned to Christianity. The Brazilian Workers' Party, to which he still belongs, is the socialist party of President Lula of Brazil who is known to be a friend of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez.
The party openly promotes legal abortion. It was also the impetus behind the pro-homosexual campaign "Brazil without Homophobia." Finally, it was instrumental in proposing three resolutions before the United Nations attempting to define homosexual practice as a "human right".
