An attack on an International Committee of the Red Cross convoy leaves one member dead.

The situation in Mali, mainly its northern part remains very tense. Armed groups settle permanently, due to the lack of governmental authority. Attacks against foreign convoys and international organizations are common and a lot of people have paid with their lives because of their presence in that risky area.

ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) An employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was killed in an attack on March 30, in the city Gao, part of the north.

The jihadist group MUJAO (Movement for the Uniqueness and Jihad in West Africa) claimed responsibility for the attacks and promises to continue attacking its targets. Another member of the Mali Red Cross was injured during the attacks.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has suspended movements in the wake of the deadly attack on their convoy in Northern Mali, that left one of their employees dead.

The offensive that occurred has given rise to indignation and worry amidst the international humanitarian organizations. Several international organizations are outraged against this attack. Among them, the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), fighting armed groups in the north. The MINUSMA condemned the attack in the strongest terms, while calling on the Malian authorities to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

So populations in northern Mali will have to wait before receiving visits from the ICRC employees. Investigation is underway after the deadly attack and no further information is available.

A spokesman for the ICRC in Bamako stated, "We have decided to temporarily suspend our movements throughout Northern Mali. Waiting to this story more clearly, all movements and activities involving travel outside urban centers are suspended."
